چکیده

In central collisions at relativistic heavy ion colliders like the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider RHIC/Brookhaven and the Large Hadron Collider LHC (in its heavy ion mode) at CERN/Geneva, one aims at detecting a new form of hadronic matter — the Quark Gluon Plasma. We discuss here a complementary aspect of these collisions, the very peripheral ones. Due to coherence, there are strong electromagnetic fields of short duration in such collisions. They give rise to photon-photon and photon-nucleus collisions with high flux up to an invariant mass region hitherto unexplored experimentally. After a general survey photon-photon luminosities in relativistic heavy ion collisions are discussed. Special care is taken to include the effects of strong interactions and nuclear size. Then photon-photon physics at various γγ-invariant mass scales is discussed. The region of several GeV, relevant for RHIC is dominated by QCD phenomena (meson and vector meson pair production). Invariant masses of up to about 100 GeV can be reached at LHC, and the potential for new physics is discussed. Photonuclear reactions and other important background effects, especially diffractive processes are also discussed. Lepton-pair production, especially electron-positron pair production is copious. Due to the strong fields there will be new phenomena, especially multiple ee pair production.

Photoproduction of heavy vector meson at the LHC

Proton-proton and ultra-peripheral nucleus-nucleus collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) will allow two-photon and photon-nucleon interactions to be studied at energies higher than at any existing accelerator. A photon from the electromagnetic field of one of the projectiles may interact with the other projectile in a variety of ways. For a recent review of so-called ultra-peripheral co...

High pT hadron spectra in high-energy heavy-ion collisions

We calculate the hadron spectra in high-energy pp, pA and AA collisions within a pQCD parton model. Analyses of experimental data show that the modification of the spectra in pA and AA as compared to that in pp collisions is consistent with multiple parton scattering scenario and is dictated by the transition from absorptive soft interaction at low pT to incoherent hard parton scattering at hig...

Four-lepton production from photon-induced reactions in pp collisions at the LHC

The study of photon–photon (γγ) fusion processes in proton–proton (pp) collisions at the LHC provides a very important test of the electroweak theory [1–3]. The γγ interactions leading to four leptons (γγ → 4`, i.e. γγ → 2e+2e−, γγ → e+e−μ+μ− and γγ → 2μ+2μ−) can be another step towards these studies. The baseline cross section, σγγ→4`, has been first estimated in the lowenergy approximation [4...

Induced photon emission from quark jets in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions

We study the induced photon bremsstrahlung from a fast quark produced in AA-collisions due to multiple scattering in quark-gluon plasma. For RHIC and LHC conditions the induced photon spectrum is sharply peaked at photon energy close to the initial quark energy. In this region the contribution of the induced radiation to the photon fragmentation function exceeds the ordinary vacuum radiation. C...
